1.   Accessible Internet Based Disability Information Dissemination Network (DID-N) and Disability Resource Centre (DRC):

CSID initiated the Internet based Disability Information Dissemination Network (DID-N) project in the year 1999 with the support of ActionAid Bangladesh. Later the project activities have been expanded from disseminating information to creating access of Persons with Disabilities into main stream ICT with the support of Sightsavers and Handicap International. On the basis of experience and learning from the last phases, from 2013 a change has been made in the project focus and design and the new title is - ACCES: Improving Quality of Life of Persons with Disabilities by Creating Access to Information – Communication, Education and Employment in Bangladesh. The focus of the project now is socio-economic development of persons with disabilities through creating access to and using ICT.

 

Major Achievements:

 

1.  As yet over 5000 subscribers enlisted with the Network from all over the Globe. This network (e-mail format and website) is accessible for all and more than 4000 information has been disseminated through this network.

 

2.  Established a Disability Resource Centre where thousands of different printed, audio-visual and Braille resource materials are available. Students, Academicians, Researchers, Professionals, Service Providers and Persons with Disabilities are visiting and using the resource centre free of cost. An accessible Cyber Café also has been established at the resource centre, where any persons with disabilities including blind persons can use internet free of cost.

 

3.  For creating access of persons with disabilities into mainstream ICT, CSID initiated partnership approach in both Public and Private sector. As the result of partnership with Public sector Visual Impaired persons are having access to computer training from Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology.  According to the MOU signed between CSID, Sightsavers and BCC. CSID providing screen reading software and sign language support including orientation to the trainers and e-centre in-charges so that they can accommodate all types of disabled persons in their trainings and e-centres free of cost up to grass-root level. 

 

4.  Furthermore in the Private sector project convinced Cyber Café Owners Association of Bangladesh (CCOAB), signed a MoU with CCOAB and according to MoU, CCOAB and CSID jointly will make main stream Cyber Cafes accessible for Persons with Disabilities all over the country. As yet 15 Cyber Cafes in Dhaka City, Barisal City, Sylhet City, Rajshahi City, Cox’s Bazar, Chadpur and Panchagor have been made accessible. In addition to that another MoU has been signed with a private sector commercial IT training centre “Creative IT”, which created opportunity for persons with disabilities to improve their IT skill.

2. Implementing a project titled “Livelihood Resource Centre (LRC)” for Persons with Disabilities:

 

Project Location: National

 

Objective: Identification & Need Assessment of persons with disabilities, Providing Training on ICT and other marketable Vocational trades and support to secure employment.

      

Major Focus:

1. Identifying and addressing legislative, policy and attitudinal gaps to promote employment rights of persons with disabilities.

2. Career guidance and counselling.

 

3. Providing market based vocational and technical training.

4. Providing training to job seekers with disabilities and support them to undertake work placements and apprenticeships.

5. Sensitize government, corporate and private sector employers for offering employment and training opportunities to persons with disabilities.

6. Facilitate disabled people’s access to social protection and other resources offered by public and private sectors.

 

Major Achievement: CSID Signed MoU with BCC, identifying trainees with disabilities and providing technical (screen reader software & sign language) support to BCC for including them in the training. Jointly with BCC organising Job Fairs for employment. As yet 451 persons have been trained from BCC and 267 are employed under this initiative.

 

In Private sector for computer and IT Training- CSID developed formal partnership with Ahsania Mission, Creative IT Ltd.; Narayongonj Youth Training Academy; Sharif and Nakshi Computer Training Centre, Rajshahi; Rainbow Computer Training Centre in Barisal by signing agreement (MOU). As the result approximate 890 persons with disabilities received training from private sector.

 

For Employment- partnership has been developed by signing MOU with BGMEA (Bangladesh Garments Manufacturing and Exporters Association), Creative IT, Ahsania Mission, CCOAB (Cyber Café Owners’ Association of Bangladesh), BACCO (Bangladesh Association of Call Centre and Out sourcing). As the result of these partnership and Job Fair a total of 715 persons with disabilities have been employed in different sectors. We have experienced from job fair that there is huge demand of skilled manpower in IT sector but among persons with disabilities it is difficult to find out required skill so the employers cannot employ, though they have vacancy and interest to employ them. As the result of project intervention an enabling environment created and access to TVET including ICT and employment for persons with disabilities increased.

3.  Inclusive Protection and Empowerment Project for Children      with Disabilities (IPEP)

                    

Project location:  Dhaka, Sylhet, Barisal, Rangpur and Gaibanda districts.  

      

Objectives:

1.  Capacity & Resilience building of children and families to   prevent and protect violence.

 

2. Responding to the problems of rehabilitation and care for    children who have been subjected to violence.

 

 

3. Ensuring national policies and actions are sensitive to the vulnerabilities of CWDs, including that the revised social protection framework in Bangladesh reflects the needs of CWDs.

 

Major Achievement:

 

1.  Training on Child protection and Resilience Building provided to 3516 Children with Disabilities, 3635 Children without Disabilities and 3325 Caregivers of Children with Disabilities.

2.  Capacity of 526 School Teachers and 548 members of SMCs enhanced on Protection of Children.

3. 3275 Community people, 117 Government Officials and 69 Local Government representatives have been sensitized on protection of child rights.

4.  Capacity of 85 Legal service professional and 115 police personnel increased in protecting children from violence.

5.  35 child clubs formed comprising total number of children 1065 including 575 children with disabilities and their capacity in protection enhanced.

6.  60 Community Based Child Protection Committees (CBCPC) have been formed within the target areas and capacity of 734 members of CBCPCs increased to protect children from any violence.

7.  Capacity increased of 91 local folk artists in producing folk songs and theatre on the issues of child protection and they are raising awareness within the community performing songs and theatre.

4. Removing Cultural Barriers (RCB)

 

Project location: Keraniginj Upazila of Dhaka district.

 

Objectives:

 

1.  Providing Health and Physical Rehabilitation services.

 

2.  Promotion of Inclusive education.

 

3. Providing Vocational Skill Training and promotion of employment of persons with disabilities.

5. Investment in Children (IiC)

 

    Project location: Dhaka

      

Goal: Increased visibility and transparency of budget allocations for children and quality expenditure at national and local government level.

 

Major Focus:

 

1.  By 2015, child budget methodology (guidelines, framework) has been finalized and will be piloted in selected ministries in the FY 2015/16 national budget

2. Government officials, including PCCR members, are more capacitated and vocal about child sensitive resource mobilization and budget allocations through policy advocacy around PEFA and 7th Five Year Plan

3.  Developed stronger evidence base for advocacy regarding selected right-based services including strengths and weaknesses

 

    Major Achievement:

 

1. Introduction of Child Budget in Bangladesh: For the last couple of years Save the Children has been demanding separate child budget in Bangladesh.  Under IiC project, advocacy and campaign were carried out to influence the policy makers. Following the advocacy initiatives of SC and CSID government declared child budget in Bangladesh. Its a great achievement indeed

 

2. Initiation of Capacity building project under Ministry of Finance: In order to implement the child budget in Bangladesh, Ministry of Finance has to develop conceptual framework and guidelines; to do this government has taken initiative to implement a capacity building project on strengthening capacity on child focused budgeting in Bangladesh.

 

3. Increased engagement of MPs on child rights and investment in children: Under the reporting period, couple of formal and informal meeting was held with PCCR members guided and supported by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Bangladesh. PCCR members promoting the advocacy issues in parliament and with concerned policy makers. 

 

4. Developed evidences for advocacy on quality public expenditure on development and protection of children: Increased knowledge and capacity of child and youth researchers on conducting right-based study and developed evidences for advocacy on stipend in secondary school, child health and public expenditure and sarkary shishu paribar

 6. ICT and Innovative Partnership- responding to well-known           challenges for children in new ways.

 

Project location: Savar, Dhaka

      

 Goal: Improved WASH facilities in targeted schools through use of ICT and innovative  partnerships with children, youth and their organizations.

Major Focus:  Major focus of this project is in three areas:

1.  Student’s empowerment by use of ICT and participation in decision making process.

2.  Establish governance in schools by increase accountability of SMC.

3.  Ensure improved WaSH in schools.   

     

Major Achievement:

 

1. Baseline study conducted to find out WaSH, ICT use and governance situation of secondary schools.

2. Advocacy Strategy Paper to fill up the policy gaps regarding school WaSH and governance have been developed.

3. Several communication materials for addressing advocacy issues have been developed.

4. PCCR have committed to include school WaSH issue as one of their agendas.

5.  Director- Secondary Education, DSHE agreed to take initiative to making circular for segregating Development budget of schools and introduce line item for WaSH and also agreed to review the monitoring system of schools.

7.  Reducing Marginilisation & Inclusion of Children and Youth with Disabilities into Mainstream Society:

      

Project location: Sylhet City area, Sadar, Dakhsin Surma  & Golapgonj Upazila.

      

Objectives:

 

1.  To Strengthen the Children and Youth with Disabilities and their organizations and enhance capacity to demand access to services and entitlements.

 

2.  To increase understanding, knowledge and capacity of service providers/duty bearers to ensure disability inclusive services.

 

3.  To improve economic empowerment of the Children and Youth with disabilities and their families and increase engagement in Income generation activities.

8.    An Inclusive Approach to Empowering Working Children” (A Project Tackling Child Labour Issues in Selected Slums in Dhaka City).

  

Project location: Dhaka City (Mohammadpur, Adabor, Pallabi, Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Sobujbagh, Badda, Jatrabari)

         

Objectives:

 

1.  Developing Municipal/ Thana / Ward level platforms for multilevel stakeholders’ child labor taskforce are functional.

2.    Raising Public voice in various forums against child labor.

 

    Major Achievement:

 

 As the result of intensive advocacy by the project –

 

1.  “Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy 2015” has been approved by Government in Parliament.

2.  Government allocated budget specifically for eliminating Child Labour.

3.  Provision of free Birth registration of Street Children, Working Children and Disabled Children established.

9. Socio-Economic Reintegration and Rehabilitation for   Survivors with Disabilities of Rana Plaza Disaster.

Project location: Savar  

  Goal: Socio-economic Reintegration and Rehabilitation for   Rana Plaza Survivors.

   Major Focus:

1.  Short listing of Rana plaza survivors to provide support.

2.  Formation of 10 self help groups of survivors with disabilities.

3.  Career guidance workshop to help the participants in choosing their livelihood option in a realistic manner.

4.  Provide psychosocial therapy.

5.  Exposure visits to factories where workers with disabilities are working to provide them with a practical knowledge.

6.  Small business development plan for selected program participants through 2 days workshop.

7.  Providing skills development training for 100 participants.

8.  Support 180 Rana plaza survivors with disabilities to be wage employed.

9.  Support 25 Rana plaza survivors with disabilities to be self employed.

Major Achievements:

1.  Identified 374 survivors with disabilities and assessed their need

2.  Developed a database on identified potential employers

3.  Formed 10 self help groups with Rana Plaza survivors and empowered

4.  Organised 2 exposure visit for the survivors

5.  Provided psychosocial support to 250 survivors

6.  Organised workshop for career guidance and business development plan

7.  45 Rana plaza survivors received vocational training on  Tailoring, Blok-Batik, Driving, and Computer

8.  In total 70 rana plaza survivors employed at various sectors.

9.  25 Rana plaza survivors will prepare small business

10.      About 200 rana plasa survivors received health support through linkages created by the project.
